I am not sure it its wise to spend that amount just to get a 720MB/sec read speed (2014 gen tech). Original Apple Pencil vs. Apple Pencil 2.

Add 1TB of storage to your 13' or 15' MacBook Pro with Retina Display, as well as your 11' or 13' MacBook Air using the 1TB Aura Internal SSD for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina Display from OWC / Other World Computing. It is pre-formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This SSD features no moving parts, helping to protect it from accidental bumps and drops, as well as achieve faster data transfer speeds.
Having no moving parts also means that this SSD will receive less wear and tear, as there are no read and write heads for the SSD media to come into contact with. In terms of speed, the drive offers sustained reads of up to 763 MB/s, sustained writes of up to 446 MB/s, read incompressible data rates up to 754 MB/s, write incompressible data rates up to 425 MB/s, 128-bit AES compliance, a Silicon Motion 2256 flash controller, and a Marvel 9230 RAID controller. It also RoHS compliant and allocates 64GB to real-time data redundancy and error correction. General Features Tier-1 Flash Aura SSDs use only Tier-1 flash for improved performance and dependability Error Correction Aura SSDs provide three levels of error correction for improved reliability and RAID-like protection for your data Cell-Level Data Refresh Aura's SSD controller monitors data blocks and maintains correct charge at the cell level, improving the integrity of your data and extending the life of your drive 7% Over Provisioning OWC SSDs perform maintenance tasks in the background that help optimize the health, performance, and endurance of your flash drive. These jobs take advantage of available, unwritten areas on the SSD. Aura PCIe-based flash storage reserves 7% of the overall capacity as free space.
With this allocated free space, Aura SSDs can perform these normal maintenance tasks making your drive more stable, dependable, and ultimately a safer place to store your data. Rated 5 out of 5 by Myron G. From The only 1TB option I purchased this 1TB SSD for my MacBook Air (early 2015, Retina display) to replace the original 128GB drive. The OWC drive was/is frustratingly expensive, but other M.2 drives will not work with these recent MacBooks. I have not tested the read and write speed of the OWC drive (or the original drive, either), but my computer is noticeably faster with the new drive. If I did not know better, I would think that I had a new computer, or at least a faster processor and more RAM.
Programs load faster, Photoshop CS6 runs smoothly, macOS Sierra does not hesitate nearly as frequently (perhaps updates helped this too), 150+GB images save quickly, etc. It makes the MacBook Air (early 2015, 1.6GHZ i5, 4GB RAM) almost as comfortable to use for photo editing as my more powerful MacBook Pro (late 2013, 23.GHz i7, 16GB RAM). I have no way of judging the ultimate reliability of this drive (or any other).
At this price, and for this market, though, it seems unlikely that OWC is going cheap for the sake of competition.
Paul, Here's the fix for the problem you have encountered. I too have a OWC SSD in my early 2015 macbook pro retina and encountered the same problem as you and thought there was no fix. But don't be discouraged. There is a fix and it works beautifully. You must install a SSD firmware update in order to install High Sierra or Mojave on yr OWC SSD. Once the firmware has been installed successfully mojave will install without any problems.
I typing this msg on my macbook pro with mojave so believe me it works. If you haven't done it you'll need to reinstall your previous os which might be Sierra. That's what I did before I did the following. First, go to this link at OWC: Then, scroll down and download the two files that are listed, the firmware utility and firmware update. Open the utility first and install it, it will create an app found in yr applications folder. Once installed, make sure you are online for the app to work. Once online go in yr applications folder and open the 'marvel utility' and a window will appear, just like the image given on the webpage.
From here just follow the instructions as given. The user name is the name you entered when you created your account on your mac. I guess for most of us it's our name. Then enter the password you use to log into your mac. Once this is done and remember you need to be online, just follow the instructions as given and.
Your ssd firmware will be updated. Close the app and restart yr mac and follow the instructions to ensure the update was successful by confirming the updated firmware version number. You can now upgrade your beautiful mac to High Sierra or Mojave. I've got mojave installed now and the installation process went smoothly. I think it's neat. Let me know how it goes. This should no doubt work for anyone who has a OWC SSD in their mac.
I await the good new from you. Regards Alfonso. Paul, Here's the fix for the problem you have encountered. I too have a OWC SSD in my early 2015 macbook pro retina and encountered the same problem as you and thought there was no fix.

I got following reply from OWC: Thank you for your email. Please make sure that your firmware is up to date ( ) for your machine. Please be sure to back up your machine before any updates are performed. Please let me know if you have any questions. After update of FW Mojave did install.
When using the update app 1st time login for me was automatically as guest. You then need to logout and login again with your Mac admin account details. (as in explanation on the website) Regards, Paul.
Owc 1tb Aura Ssd Apple For Mac Pro 2013 -
Hi all Just to explain what I did, as I was planning in my last post above. I Made sure I had at least one backup with Time Machine and then I inserted the Mac SSD in the Mac Pro, and managed to upgrade that to High Sierra and then Mojave (you may be able to do this directly).
I then swapped the SSD's back, reinserting the Aura into the Mac. I used Carbon Copy Clone (free trial) to clone the Mac SSD to the Aura, and this worked-the Aura was running Mojave OS 10.14.
I set up my account details, then used Time Machine with Migration Assistant in Utilities to restore my files and Apps (all data except OS). This worked when nothing else would, so I suggest you try it, ensuring you are happy with your backup. Apple Footer.
